T H E   J O U R N E Y

Few people dream about creating something that already exists. When one thinks about starting their new business, building a useful invention, or creating an inspired piece of artwork, it is rarely a mere copy of something that has been made. Everyone wants to be an innovator, but how many of them really have the skills and knowledge required to turn those ideas into impact? These skills have been the focus of my time during my studies in the Bachelor of Innovation program. For each project that I took on, I made it a necessity that I create something for which there is no comparable substitute.

In my education journey, I discovered a new form of innovation that I had not previously considered. When we think about how an engineer constructs a skyscraper, we rationally imagine that they have a very by-the-book way of creating the building plans. This is how I imagined programming games would be. However, when you are making never-before-seen game mechanics, you are in uncharted territory. There are no tutorials to guide you, and the best help you will find is usually small scraps of information pieced together from multiple sources. This is how I became very familiar with the concept of innovation within a technical field. Constantly having to tackle virtual engineering problems opened up a world of logical creativity for me, and it was love at first sight. This is a concept that is not exclusive to programming games. Early architectural engineers had to innovate and iterate on numerous designs before they were able to construct the impossibly tall and ornate buildings that we see today. Through this process, I am able to constantly further my technical and innovative skill.

The field of game development is a beautiful fusion of art and logic. While people marvel at the accomplishments in fields like architecture that enrich our world, I believe that the art of game design is worthy of the same judgement. We envision what new interesting and engaging experiences a person can have, and then we sculpt that vision out of polygons and code. I sincerely look forward to exploring and pushing what this medium of art is truly capable of.
